By 1947, the Korean peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel, an act of the United States military. In June 1950, the communist North Korea invaded South Korea, which began a civil war that was halted with armistice in 1953 but still is not technically over. During the three years of fighting, the United Nations forces and the North Koreans were involved in a tug of war. Lot of families were separated after 6.25 war happened. For example, my mom's great grandparents are North Koreans. They came from North Korea when 6.25 war was happening. So my grandpa (my mom's dad) is North Korean.
A. Detective
As a detective I gathered historical proof through a variety of differing sources/artifacts.
I interviewed my mom about my moms uncle because obviously it was her uncle and she heard lots of stories from him.
Q: So what was his rank in the army?
A: He was just a soldier who fought in 6.25.
Q: Why did he have to go fight?
A: Ofcourse he didn’t want to. But he had to because he was a soldier at that time. He was in the 20s when he was getting trained from the military.
Q: So what happened to him in 6.25?
A: He stepped on the mine trap.
Q: Did he die after he stepped on it? Because I heard that most of the soldiers died because of it.
A: Luckily he didn’t! However, his one eye got blind. However as he got old, his other eye got blind too.
Q: Was he proud of himself for fighting in 6.25 for his country?
A: Well, he wasn’t that proud of himself because he was a soldier at that time and he had to go fight. Also, he got married after he came back from the war so he was blind when he got married. So he never saw his wife and his daughter and son. He didn't have anyone to meet except for his wife.
Q: Thank you for supporting for my family history project!
A: Your welcome!
Source Type:
The type of first three artifacts will be primary source. The first two pictures will be count as one primary source because it's a same graveyard but one is close up and one is just showing the back ground of it. Since the picture of where my mom's uncle's graveyard is, is an artifact it's a primary source. Also, the sunglass that he wore when he went outside is an artifact so that can be a primary source too. The third picture is a secondary source because it’s a written source about land mines. Also, the bottom of the land mine picture is a interview so that will be also a secondary source.
Description of Source:
The first picture is a picture of where my mom's uncle's special graveyard is and the stone of my mom's uncle's graveyard. It tells what position he was, what type of soldier he was, and his name. I couldn't get a picture of my mom's uncle because he never took pictures after the war and before the war it was all gone and lost because of the war. The second picture is what my grandpa wore when he went out of his house because his one eye was blind and the other eye he could barely see anything. The third picture is an article that is talking about land mines and how dangerous they are and what can happen if you step on it. Bottom of the land mine is the interview that I did with mom about her uncle's story.
B. Interpreter
Once I have gathered all of my information I must decide exactly what I want to prove historically. I will be generating contradictions between "Before War" and "After War" of my mom's uncle.
C. Judge
Since my family history is long, there are lots of events that happened. For example, when my dad came out of his office because of IMF and he made his own company or the necklace that my mom got from her mom. However the reason why I chose this event is because it has more evidence and more high spec background. Also when I interview with mom about this event then there are lots of evidence for my event. To find the right event, I was imitating myself as if I was a judge and looked at the evidence and decide which point of view/idea/thesis is correct or the most accurate. That's why I got to choose about 6.25 war that my mom's uncle attended.
D. Philosopher
Now that I have judged and interpreted the collected evidence, the next step for me to do is to attach meaning to it historically. I should care that my mom's uncle attended the 6.25 war because it's a great honor for our family that at least one of our family fought for South Korea. Also, after the war until my mom's uncle past away he always told himself that he wants to die early so that his family can have more easy life. He was depressed all the time and he always felt sorry for his family. But I think different I think he shouldn't be depressed at all and he didn't get blind because he did something bad or something. It was an accident from a war. So by reviewing of what mom's uncle did, I think it's important that I should care of what he did because he should be honored by his family and from Korea.
TIMELINE
Turning Point:
If my mom's uncle didn't go to war our family wouldn't have been honored and he might've just died because he was running away from war. He would've died for no reason or maybe get hurt with no reason. Also, if he wasn't a soldier at that time and didn't attend war, then there would've been no history for our family and no one would've been honored from their country.
